Problem

As a junior at an all-girls high school, I was constantly bombarded with statistics like these: "7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way"--whether that be in appearance, performance, or relationships (1). In 2013, my junior year of high school, I became determined to change these statistics, to create a space for teenage girls like me to feel empowered. I believed a crucial issue was the absence of awareness around feminism (at the time), a limited amount of positive and strong female role models who represented a variety of professional fields, and a shortage of media spaces with spaces for discussion around self-esteem issues or health issues.

Task

My co-founder and I launched Powerful Women with these goals:

  1. Creating an online platform for teenage girls, by teenage girls

  2. Forming a holistic space to discuss topics, such as self-confidence, career options, and health and wellness

  3. Using our online content to spark in-person discussions

Approach

Over the course of two years, I created a cross-disciplinary platform with a user-friendly website and engaging content. More specifically, I took upon these roles:

  1. Designing a simple to navigate website and establishing brand tone

  2. Managing social media platforms

  3. Oversaw larger vision and key metrics (users)

  4. Guiding three student interns who joined in Fall 2014

  5. Producing meaningful content by writing blog posts and crafting video content through in-person interviews

  6. Expanding our network by forming partnerships with other companies, collaborating with female experts in their fields and student writers, and presenting to local middle school student
